I was reading an article recently that made me sad. It was about how kids grow up too fast these days. Isn’t it the truth though?! We look around and see the way little girl’s dress, the fact that kids have cell phones and are into “grown up things”. What happened to playing dolls, riding bikes, and make believe?? To me kids do grow up too fast and I think it’s because parents allow too much. We should put age limits on things, such as wearing makeup, internet use, dating, getting jobs etc….. Just delay some things that should come over time. Why rush our kids to grow up? It will happen soon enough. I remember growing up and playing outside with my sisters. We would make hide-outs and play dolls, ride bikes, use our imaginations. Seems like the majority of kids don’t do this anymore, and to me it’s pretty sad! Let’s keep our kids, KIDS while they still are KIDS! J A challenge this new year….. Allow our kids to be kids, spend more quality time with them. Childhood will be gone soon enough!Love, Spring
I agree! :0) We were just saying the other night how it’s crazy that companies make these movies from “kids” things- Transformers, Spiderman, Batman, etc., and then kids can’t (shouldn’t!) even watch them because they’re PG-13. yet, many do. Too much of a rush, like you said.
I agree and it’s not just toys either…Even their playtime and places can get too structured anymore. That’s why I wrote that essay on our blog “dirt and trees” about the vacant lot we used to play in next door to my house when I was little–MUCH better than a park even. Our imaginations soared there through our creativity and child-initiated ideas! –Cheryl
There are two great books about recapturing childhood as we used to know it…minus video games and tv stuff…
The Dangerous Book For Boys
The Daring Book For Girls
The have lists and lists of things to do for kids with full instructions.
I agree…I think that’s another reason we have to be careful about what we allow our kids to watch because it desensitizes them to the world and it’s ways. Our kids are lucky if they get to go to the theatre more than once a year. I want to encourage them to dress like children, play hopscotch, and build go carts. Camping is a great way to nurture this as well.
Great post Spring!
