For a while now we’ve been teaching the boys about earning money and saving money and trying to give them a true perspective that they have to save up for things they are wanting and can’t just go out and buy whenever they feel like it. Also, training them that it is very important to give back to God. They have weekly chores that they HAVE to do just being apart of the family and pitching in, like we all have to do and then they have a chart on the fridge of chores that we would like them to do, but they are paid chores, things they can do to earn money. Sat. is pay day and they are sometimes very eager for pay days to come.
With their money they split it up into wallet money (money they can have to spend on what they want, or keep there to save for something they want to buy….. now they are keeping it in their wallet for an upcoming DISNEYLAND trip in October…. and they both want spending money…. so they have to learn to save for that). Then they each have a can that they put some of their earnings in to savings. Once they reach $50 they get to put it into their mutual fund, which we started back in 2004 for each of them with money we got from the car accident. This is money we tell them they can use for a car or house someday 🙂 Then they have their GIVE envelope and some of their pay goes to offering each Sunday. They always seem excited to give back to God.
We just counted up Gregory’s SAVE money and he has reached $50.73 cents. Tonight we are writing a check to send off to his mutual fund. He’s pretty excited that he has reached that number already. Adam isn’t too far behind him either.
Gregory just started his first real weekly outside the home job. He goes every Thursday to a ladies home in town and scoops poop, dumps in trash can and wheels out her cans for Trash pick up the next day. He gets $5.00 each Thursday. Pretty good for a first time job, and only at 9 years old! So far Gregory seems very excited about having a little job and earning that much money. Brian or I bring him and wait outside for him to do his job.
Adam might start walking Skip (my Mom’s dog) daily for his “outside” job. I’ll go with him of course to walk Skip. He seemed excited when Granma asked him to do this. Today he got Skip running which is good for her. She needs to get out and get exercise and loves to sniff everything. This gives Adam his “dog fix” too…. so we don’t need to get one 🙂
