Chicken Harvest

My dad decided to get a bunch a baby chicks to raise for food. This morning at 6:30 AM it was time to kill a batch of them. We did 26 chickens! The boys and I helped Pat (a friend) , Pop, Mom, and Levi. I have to say it was an experience! It wasn’t an easy thing. Levi did a lot of the work and it was hard. It was rewarding knowing that they were raised by us, and organic! Kind of cool. I have about 4 in my freezer right now. Pop showed me how to cut up the whole chicken too. We were gonna fry chicken tonight, but decided to do it another day. I think we are going to the Holladay’s Sunday and will have a big chicken dinner together.
The boys had never seen it done before. Adam was a little taken back. We figured it was a good thing to experience though…. to know where our food comes from! 🙂
Mom plucked the most! She gets the PLUCKING AWARD 🙂
Gregory and Adam did a little plucking. Pop says its much easier to just SKIN them, but we all wanted to give this way a try.

The chickens aren’t that big, but they will be tasty when cooked!

When I was about Adam's age (maybe a little younger) my dad cut the head off a chicken and it ran after me. Seriously, I'm not joking. The saying, "running around like a chicken with your head cut off" has truth to it. I think it's some sort of muscle reflex or something (don't know the specific sciences of it) but anyway, it darted right at me! LOL

Looks like you guys will have a nice family chicken fry now! Your family does the coolest things together! =)
