I’m still in the process of figuring out how our new homeschool things will flow. Its exciting getting everything all figured out, but can lead to a bit of stress trying to find the right methods and material that will work for Adam (and eventually others).
Currently of the 5 different homeschool methods, I’m leaning more toward a Charolette Masson approach in most areas. I loved this quick over view of who she was and what her method was all about. We will see how that pans out the rest of this year. I love her ideas narration (this has been great for Adam), short lessons, being outside, copy work habits & Manners, & Living books. I’m still a bit unsure about dictation, but we are trying it. So far Adam is doing good and loving this new way of doing school. Its a lot of reading. More than he’s used to. However, its good books that he’s been enjoying. Since we’ve pulled him from K12 he’s read 4 literature books already. After each chapter or two he narrates back to me what he’s read. We talk about the books.
I think we will start “note booking” This will be a neat way for him to keep things in one place and also will be a great gathering place for all he’s learned. It is here where he will write about his books/book reports, facts, science things, history things, Bible. Basically EVERYTHING will be in this notebook.
We are currently doing a routine. I love routines. I have to have somewhat of a plan ….. I’m learning not to be so NATZI with it though, but I do need a routine. I love not setting a certain TIME frame for certain subjects though. That has been a huge burden lifted! Also not having to CHECK off and finish EVERYTHING. I think Adam is learning or retaining more than he ever has (even though I don’t have it all together yet).
I’m loving our MORNING TIME (morning basket as some call it).
I miss not doing this with all of them though. I feel like they miss out. I’m always excited when we can all do it together.
MORNING TIME lasts about 30 minutes right now.
- Prayer,
- Hymn (and read about the history of that song). We have done a new one every week or 2 weeks. We play that hymn daily.
- Personal devotion (adam and I each do ours).
- Preschool devotion aloud for the little ones
- Preschool poem/nursery rhyme (one a week, we memorize)
- WHO is God Bible study book (Adam and I read aloud)
Hoping to add in a composer/ art study during this time. Haven’t yet. Possibly a BIRD STUDY too. Thinking through those.
Anytime something is read aloud, kids can be drawing, play dough, making bracelets, just sitting, mouth shut, ears open. Annie Mae doesn’t get this all the time. Its a bit of a challenge… but hopefully in time it will work out. Morning time has been wonderful in starting our day off with Jesus and putting HIM first. We have had some really great discussions thus far.
History/ Literature. We will be trying Early American History from Beautiful Feet and reading living books and that will be our literature (getting the books at the library and just buying the study guide). This one for next year
He’s learning Cursive writing still (we have a great book for that).
Typing (learning to type with an online program)
Science APOLOGIA Science (and Adam is loving it. He picked it out)
Guitar (practicing daily)
Grammar (we have a grammar book he practices daily)
Hoping to do a little computer Science with Daddy some
Trying out the copywork, narration/ dictation
We will see how this all works and I’m praying God just lead and direct us as we go along.
I love her pondering on the book “TEACHING FROM REST” !! Love this book. I did the audio one. I need to re-listen to it! So good.
