Glasses for Gregory

Gregory failed his eye exam at school so we took him to the eye dr. today. His vision was 20/ 60. His left eye is not being used. It’s called Amblyopia. The blurred eye “turns off”. The eyes look normal but one eye isn’t working. He’s also got Hyperopia which is also known as farsightedness. This is due to the eyeball being too short. The light rays are focused behind the retina, so then the image that forms on the retina is blurred. Glasses will help “pull” the clear image onto the retina. If we don’t get glasses, his eyes will get worse and worse and he will become legally blind.

Gregory was very sad and emotional about getting glasses. It was sad for me (Mommy) too… to see him so upset. Mostly thinking that his friends won’t like him anymore or that people will think he looks funny. I felt awful that he was having to go through all this!

We had a fun “date” today though, just me and him. He got a new football cap that he really wanted and I took him to lunch. We talked a lot about glasses and how God has a special reason for him to be a boy with glasses.

Another thing is that he will have to wear them all the time when he is awake and its not just to “correct” the problem. I don’t think there is “correcting”. He’ll most likely wear them for life.

We are taking him in for a 2nd opinion on Monday Oct. 1st. The dr. we saw today was very “rushy” and we weren’t happy. Then we will look into glasses.

Gregory will look cute in glasses!! And probably all the other kids will wish they had glasses like him. We’ll keep him in our prayers.

Poor guy. It is a big change, but he will do well. My Brian had to wear glasses since he was Gregory’s age (until he got them lasered 9 years ago). Tell Gregory that we said he will just look really smart and be happier because he will be able to see so much clearer.
